Cropping a video is choosing a new window into the frame: the top and bottom off a landscape clip to make it vertical for a reel, the sides off to make it square, the clutter at the edges gone. This tool puts a drag box over a live preview of your video, so you crop what you see, not numbers you are guessing at.

Start from a ratio preset, 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:5 or 4:3, or drag freehand and type exact numbers if you have them. The numbers snap to even values on their own, because video codecs demand even dimensions and an odd one is a failed encode. What you draw is what gets written: the preview box and the output frame are the same rectangle.

    How to crop a video

    1. Drop the video into the box. A preview appears with a crop box over it.

    2. Pick a ratio preset, then drag the box and its corners until the right part of the frame is inside.

    3. Fine-tune with the number fields if you like. The box and the numbers stay in step.

    4. Press Crop the Video and download the result.

    Crop is not resize

Cropping throws picture away and keeps the rest at full quality. Resizing keeps the whole picture and scales it. Cropping a landscape clip to 9:16 keeps a sharp vertical slice. Resizing it to 9:16 would squash faces or pad the frame with bars. Most social crops want the slice. If the whole frame must survive, the resize tool’s Fit mode is the honest route, bars and all.

    Details and honest limits

The engine note: this runs a real encoder inside your browser. The first job downloads about 31 MB of engine files once, your browser caches them, and your video itself never leaves the device.

Cropping re-encodes the picture, so files under 200 MB and 10 minutes are the comfortable range, and output quality is set to stay close to the source. A crop smaller than 16 pixels in either direction is refused, because nothing usable lives at that size. There is no automatic subject detection in this version: where the box goes is your call, which for a deliberate crop is the point. For a size change instead, see resize video. Everything else is in the video tools collection.

What to check before you crop

Two things decide whether a crop succeeds before you touch the box. The first is resolution headroom: a 1080p landscape frame cropped to a vertical slice gives you a slice about 608 pixels wide from the middle, which is then shown at 1080 wide, so it softens. Starting from a 4K source, the same slice keeps real detail. The second is subject placement: a speaker standing at the frame’s edge cannot be centred by any crop, because the pixels beyond the frame do not exist. Knowing both takes ten seconds and saves a re-shoot’s worth of disappointment.

    FAQs

How do I make a video vertical for Reels or TikTok?

Choose the 9:16 preset, drag the box over the part of the frame that matters, and crop. The output is a true vertical video at the full height of your source.

    Does cropping reduce quality?

The part inside the box keeps the source’s detail. Cropping itself discards the outside, it does not blur the inside. The re-encode writes at a quality setting close to the original.

Why did my numbers change by one pixel?

Video codecs require even widths and heights. The tool rounds your numbers to the nearest even values automatically, a shift of at most one pixel.

Can the tool find the subject automatically?

No, and it does not pretend to. Automatic subject tracking is a desktop-editor feature. Here the box goes exactly where you put it, which is what a careful crop needs.

What is the difference between crop and resize?

Crop cuts the frame down to a part of the picture. Resize scales the whole picture to new dimensions. This page crops. The resize page scales, with fit, fill and stretch modes.

    Is my video uploaded?

No. The preview and the crop both happen in your browser.
