This sales tax calculator adds tax to a price, splits the tax back out of a total that already includes it, and can even work out the rate that was charged from a price and a total. You bring the rate, since rates change by place and by date.

How to use this sales tax calculator

    1. Choose the mode that matches your figures: add tax, split tax out of a total, or find the rate.
    2. Type the price or the total, depending on the mode.
    3. Type the tax rate. If your bill combines a state rate and a local rate, add them together first and type the combined rate.
    4. Read the tax amount and the figure on the other side of it.
    5. Use the button under the tool to download a text summary of the result.

The split mode is the receipt case. A total on a receipt hides the tax inside it, and dividing the total by 1 plus the rate over 100 pulls the pre-tax price back out.

Why this sales tax page asks you for the rate

Sales tax is not one tax. It is thousands of overlapping state, county, city and district rates, and they change often enough that any built-in list would quietly go stale. A calculator that guessed your rate could give a confident wrong answer.

So this page works as a calculator, not a rate database. The rate you type is the rate it uses. Your receipt, your state revenue site or your seller dashboard will have the rate that applies to a given purchase.

If you do not know the rate but you do know the price and the total charged, the third mode works it out for you. That is handy for checking a receipt or a marketplace payout where the rate was never printed.

Sales tax rounding and other small print

Shops round tax per item or per order, and the two ways can disagree by a cent on the same basket. If this page and a receipt differ by a cent, neither figure is wrong. The rounding was done at a different step.

Some goods are taxed at reduced rates or not at all, and some buyers are exempt. The tool does not know any of that. It applies the one rate you give it to the one amount you give it.

Nothing is uploaded or stored. The figures are worked out in your browser, and there is no sign-up and no limit on how often you can check a receipt.

    FAQs

How do I take sales tax out of a total?

Divide the total by 1 plus the rate divided by 100. At an 8 percent rate, a total of 108 divides by 1.08 to give a pre-tax price of 100, with 8 of tax inside it. The split mode on this page does this.

How do I add sales tax to a price?

Multiply the price by the rate over 100 to get the tax, then add it on. At 8 percent on 100, the tax is 8 and the total is 108. The first mode shows the tax and the total side by side.

How can I find the tax rate from a receipt?

You need the pre-tax price and the total. The rate is the tax divided by the pre-tax price, times 100. The third mode does it from the two figures, which helps when a receipt prints a total but not the rate.

Why does my receipt differ from the calculator by a cent?

Rounding. A shop may round the tax on each item as it scans, or round once on the whole order. Both are accepted practice, and the two orders of rounding can land a cent apart on the same basket.

Should I add my state and city rates together?

Yes, if both apply to the purchase. Sales tax at the till is usually one combined rate made of state, county, city and district parts. Add the parts that apply to you and type the single combined rate into the tool.

Does this calculator know the rate where I live?

No, and that is deliberate. Rates vary street by street in some places and change over time, so the page uses the rate you type rather than guessing from a list that could be out of date.
