This Spell Checker checks your text against a dictionary of about 379,000 English words held in the page itself. Pick US or UK English, run the check, and get ranked suggestions for each flagged word. Nothing you type is sent anywhere, and there is no length cap.

How the Spell Checker works on your text

Paste or type your text, choose US or UK English, and run the check. Every word is looked up in the dictionary stored in the page. Words with no match are flagged, and each flag comes with suggestions ranked by how close the spelling is and how common the word is in normal writing.

The variety choice matters. If you pick US English, UK spellings are flagged and the US form is offered, and the same holds in reverse. The change is never made in silence. About 200 known pairs are handled this way, among them colour and color, centre and center, travelled and traveling, cheque and check, plus whole families such as words ending in -ise and -ize or -our and -or.

Click a suggestion to swap it in, or ignore a word that is right. Ignored words go to a personal list kept in your browser, so your name, your town and your trade terms stop being flagged on this device.

When people use this Spell Checker

Writers use it as a clean second pair of eyes after drafting in a program whose own checker shares their blind spots. Because this dictionary sits in the page and differs from your editor, it can catch slips your usual tool has learned to pass from your ignore list there.

People who write in both varieties use it before sending work across the Atlantic. A UK writer sending a US client draft, or a US student quoting UK sources, can spot mixed spellings that read as careless even when each word is fine on its own ground.

It also suits quick checks away from your main tools: a post typed on a shared computer, a form answer, a listing or a message where no built-in checker is running. The page loads its dictionary once and works on long pastes without a cap, where at least one known checker limits pasted text to 5,000 characters.

Spell Checker suggestions and the ignore list

Suggestions are ranked guesses, not orders. The top suggestion is the closest common word, but a rare name or a term from your field may sit lower or be absent. Skim the list before you click, and keep the word you meant when none of the options match it.

The ignore list is stored in your browser and nowhere else. It makes repeat work faster, since names you use daily stop raising flags. The trade-off is that the list dies with your browser storage, and a word you ignored by mistake will pass in later checks until you clear it.

Honest limits of a dictionary Spell Checker

An unknown word means one thing only: it is not in this dictionary. It does not prove the word is misspelled. Names, new coinages, rare words and terms from narrow fields will be flagged even when they are spelled right, and no dictionary of any size fully solves that.

Real word errors are invisible to a dictionary. Loose typed for lose, form typed for from, or their typed for there are all valid spellings, so a spell check passes them in silence. For those slips you need context rules or a slow read of your own. Pair this check with a read aloud pass and you cover both kinds of error far better than either step alone.

    FAQs

How many words does the dictionary hold?

About 379,000 English words, loaded into the page so checks run on your device. That is a large working dictionary, but names, rare words and new terms can still be missing and will be flagged.

What is the difference between the US and UK modes?

Each mode treats the other variety as a flag and offers the matching form, for pairs like colour and color or centre and center. Nothing is changed without your click, so quoted text stays as you wrote it.

Why was a correct word flagged?

It is not in this dictionary. Names, places, brands and specialist terms are common cases. If the spelling is right, ignore the word and it joins your personal list in this browser for later checks.

Can it catch lose written as loose?

No. Both are real words, so a dictionary check passes them. That class of error needs context rules, which the Grammar Checker on this site covers for common pairs, plus your own final read.

Is there a limit on text length?

No cap is set here. Paste a full chapter if you like and run the check in one pass. Some checkers limit pastes to a few thousand characters. This one works in your browser, so length is your call.

Where does my text go when I check it?

Nowhere. The dictionary and the checking code run in your browser tab. Your text and your ignore list stay on your device, and no account or sign-up is involved at any point.
