HEIC to PNG when the copy has to be exact

Some jobs want an iPhone photo with nothing discarded: editing work, print preparation, a copy worth archiving. This tool decodes HEIC photos in your browser and saves them as PNG, the lossless format that stores every pixel it is handed. No upload, no account, and the photo never leaves your device.

The decoder runs locally on this page. If a file is not truly a HEIC, renamed by an app or damaged in transit, the tool tells you in plain words rather than producing a broken image.

How to convert HEIC to PNG

    1. Drop your HEIC photos into the box above, or click to pick them from your device.
    2. Press Convert. PNG has no quality setting, so there is nothing to adjust and nothing to get wrong.
    3. Give a big batch a moment. Decoding and writing large lossless files takes real work on your device.
    4. Download the PNGs, one directly or many together in a single ZIP.

The size warning first, not last

A PNG photograph is a big file, and nobody should learn that from a filled hard drive. PNG is built for exactness, not economy, and a photograph is the hardest subject it can be asked to hold. Expect the PNG to run several times the size of the HEIC it came from, and larger than the JPG version of the same photo too. A photo that left the phone at 3 MB can come back as a PNG past 10 MB. Convert an album of fifty photos and you are looking at a serious folder. None of this is a fault. It is what pixel-for-pixel storage costs, and it is better said here than discovered later.

HEIC to PNG or HEIC to JPG: which one

For editing and further work, choose PNG. Its lossless saving means the copy you open in an editor is the photo itself, ready for retouching, cropping or print, and if the source file holds any transparency, the alpha channel survives the trip. For sharing, email, forms and everyday viewing, choose JPG through HEIC to JPG: a tenth of the weight and every app on earth opens it. The honest rule is simple. PNG is the workshop copy, JPG is the travelling copy.

Details that matter on this page

A Live Photo converts as its still image, since the video half is not part of the photo file the decoder reads. The conversion redraws each photo from its pixels, so GPS coordinates and other phone metadata stay behind in the original and never reach the PNG, while the saved rotation is applied and the picture stands upright. Because all of this runs on your own hardware, an older phone will feel a large batch more than a new laptop will. Ten or twenty photos at a time keeps things quick everywhere, and photos bound for a document can move on to HEIC to PDF once converted.

    Private by construction

The decoding and saving run in this browser tab. Your photos are never uploaded, stored or viewed by anyone else. There is no account, no daily cap and no watermark, on this page or anywhere in the image converters family.

    FAQs

Why is the PNG so large?

Because PNG stores every pixel exactly, and a photograph holds millions of them in constant variation. The PNG will be several times the HEIC size and bigger than a JPG of the same photo. That weight is the cost of a lossless copy.

Is the PNG copy really lossless?

Yes. PNG saving discards nothing, so the file is a pixel-faithful copy of the decoded photo, ready for editing or print. What the camera captured is what the PNG holds.

    Does the PNG keep transparency?

If the source file holds an alpha channel, yes, it carries into the PNG untouched. Ordinary camera photos have no transparency to keep, so for most photos the question never comes up.

Which should I pick for editing, PNG or JPG?

PNG. An editor opening the PNG works on the full photo with no compression damage baked in. Pick JPG when the photo is only travelling: sharing, uploading, emailing. It is far lighter and opens everywhere.

What if the tool says my file is not a HEIC?

The file could not be decoded as a genuine HEIC photo. It may have been renamed, saved in another format under a .heic name, or cut short during a transfer. Export a fresh copy from the Photos app and try that one.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. The decoder runs in your browser on your device. Nothing is sent or stored, there is no sign-up, and closing the tab leaves nothing behind.
